Son of John St Loe Strachey and a left-wing intellectual, Strachey was an author and leading light of the Left Book Club. Previously a member of the Communist Party, before serving as Minister of Food under Attlee in 1946. In this post he was responsible for introducing the hated bread ration in the same year.
